On May 18, 2013, presidents and representatives of national colleges and societies of ophthalmologists from the 10 ASEAN countries, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, came together in Bangkok to participate in the first summit of the societies of ophthalmologists from the ASEAN countries. The main purpose of the summit was to form the ASEAN Ophthalmology Society (AOS).

Back in 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was also founded in Bangkok. Since then the 10 ASEAN countries have got together and moved forward to achieve economic and political co-operation, and our efforts have been so successful that we are about to form a single market called the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. The formation of the AOS was perfectly timed in order to prepare for the upcoming AEC.

The newly formed AOS will have more than 4,000 ophthalmologists. At present several projects of ophthalmic care are being planned in Thailand and the region. There is no doubt that Thailand and Southeast Asia region provide a vast open market for global ophthalmic care industries.

The first academic congress of the AOS, which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 19th to 21st February 2014 at the Bangkok Convention Centre at Central World, will the very first step taken by ophthalmologists in this region in an attempt to unite, share, and exchange expertise not only for people with eye problems in their region but for global ophthalmology.
